Spinet
|
The spinet, which was popular from the latter half of the seventeenth century to the end of the eighteenth century, is an instrument of the Harpsichord family. The sound is produced by plucking the strings, although Spinets usually only have one set of strings and therefore cannot vary their sound in the way that a Harpsichord can. Sometimes small octave spinets have trapezoid or rectangular cases, however the bentside Spinet looks like a small Harpsichord which has been twisted slightly. A Spinet will always have its long bass strings at the back and the short treble strings at the front [16]. This is the opposite way round to a virginal.
